What is a Hernia?
It can be defined as the bulging of intra-abdominal tissues and organs from the congenitally weak or subsequently weakened area in the abdominal wall. Inguinal, umbilical and peri-umbilical hernias are examples of hernias arising from a congenitally weak area. Hernias arising from the weakened area afterwards are called incisional hernias. % 90 of abdominal wall hernias are inguinal hernias and are more common in men. Those that occur as a result of failure to close or re-open the inguinal canal that should be closed after birth are called indirect inguinal hernia, those that arise from the weak point in the abdominal wall are called direct inguinal hernia, and those that arise from the umbilical pit are called umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernias are mostly seen in women. Hernias around the navel are relatively rare. Incisional hernias develop at the incision site in people who have had previous surgery.
What are the Findings?
Hernias may cause complaints such as swelling under the skin in the area where they occur, pain in the area, abdominal pain in the form of cramps, especially after eating, and constipation. In case of strangulated hernia, intestinal obstruction findings, severe pain, infection findings may develop.
How is it diagnosed?
Detailed anamnesis and physical examination is the gold standard for diagnosis. Superficial tissue ultrasonography is performed in case of suspicious findings in the examination or when the opposite groin should also be evaluated in inguinal hernia. Computerised tomography is appropriate for incisional hernias before repair.
What is Hernia Treatment?
Regardless of the location, the treatment of hernia disease is surgical. It is not possible any medication or regression on its own. Patients may feel relief in their complaints with hernia tie, corset, sports underwear, but these methods do not contribute to the treatment of hernia; nor do they protect from the risks associated with the disease.
What happens if not treated?
Since the organ that bulges from the abdominal wall is often the intestines, if this intestine area in the hernia is compressed in the hernia sac, its circulation is impaired, the operation becomes urgent, and this intestine part, whose circulation is impaired and gangrenised during the operation, may need to be removed.
